Addressing Premature Aging in Children: A Wake-Up Call for Parents
This article in the newspaper today made me think hard. Toddlers with grey hair and an eight year old with high cholesterol !!!…where are we heading to?
There are a bunch of other problems which indicate premature aging in children, such as
- Early onset of Type 2 Diabetes
- Wearing glasses at an early age
- Greying of hair
- Earlier signs of facial hair in boys
- Attaining menarche at the age of 7-10 years.
If we are thinking of blaming the genes for the same then we are wrong….Genetic factors only account for a meager 20% of premature aging. Most of them are lifestyle diseases which are directly related to a sedentary lifestyle and unhealthy eating patterns, leading to “Obesity”.
This is one topic I can go on writing and speaking about, but today I am really disturbed and worried about the future of our nation.
Summer holidays are on for all the kids…..please make sure they do not spend the entire day sitting idle in front of the idiot box or busy with their other latest gizmos. Let them play in the parks or encourage them to join some kind of sports activity. Go on family cycling trips, if planning for vacations try to look out for options which have some adventurous outdoor activities, rather than a plush bed to sleep on the whole day!!!
This is the season for the freshest fruits, cherry, watermelon, musk melon, peaches, sweet limes, papaya, and apricots, stock up your kitchen with these rather than chips, cookies, or sweets. Make healthy food option available for them always, and discard all junk food from your kitchen.
