India is currently in the midst of an obesity and diabetes epidemic. Very soon, after we will earn the dubious distinction of being designated as the Diabetes capital of the world. Bariatric and Metabolic Surgery is an effective and long-lasting treatment of obesity and its co-morbidities like diabetes, hypertension, etc. Now, Bariatric and Metabolic Surgery and nutrition has emerged as a new super specialty all over the country owing to it's overwhelming demand. The nutritional needs of bariatric patients are very different from an otherwise obese person; a new role of a trained bariatric nutritionist has therefore opened up. Unfortunately, in India, we do not have a comprehensive curriculum to cover this specialty in the postgraduate degree program. To fulfill this pressing need, this fellowship in Bariatric & Metabolic Nutrition has been designed to impart in-depth information about bariatric nutrition. This fellowship would provide comprehensive knowledge of pre-operative workup, the types of surgical procedures, medical nutrition therapy for postoperative patients and long-term follow-up.
This fellowship intends to provide an overview of all the critical elements a bariatric dietician must be aware of, as a bariatric dietician plays the key role in the nutritional management of the patients undergoing Bariatric and Metabolic surgery.
